James Baker has been Director of Music at The Thomas Hardye School for the past 6 years. During that time, he has been responsible for an incredibly wide variety of musical activities and opportunities that have been enjoyed by students, and staff! The list is long, but includes leading foreign tours, concert trips and Weymouth Festival appearances, as well as organising visits to the school from university academics, army and other music professionals. He has run a large number of highly successful performing groups in school and been responsible for impressive GCSE and A level results each year. In the last 5 years, 27 Hardye’s students have gone on to university and music college to study Music. For the past 4 years, he has also run DASP Music, that co-ordinates music teaching and school concerts in the Dorchester area.

Sadly, but inevitably, James is moving on. He has been appointed Assistant Head Teacher of a school in Surrey. He will be very greatly missed at Hardye’s. There is a chance to say goodbye to ‘Mr Baker’ when he conducts and plays (an oboe concerto!) as part of a concert on Saturday 5th July at 7.30pm in St Peter’s Church, Dorchester. Entrance is free (there will be a collection at the end for church and Hardye’s Music Department expenses). All are invited – especially former students who would like to wish him well as he moves to Surrey.

And don't forget the DASP Prom Concert on 21st June at St Mary's Middle School.
