The Thomas Hardye School

Good news for University Early Applicants.

Oxbridge

We are delighted to be able to report on another really successful year for our Early Applicants. Whilst the Oxbridge offers arrive in January, our other Early Applicants often have to wait until late spring to find out their interview results and we can now announce the details of the full cohort of this year’s successful Early Applicants.

Jessamy Baker has been offered at place at the University of Oxford to read Law, along with Historian Holly Anderson and Musician Lydia Bennett. Former student Eleanor Ninham will study Natural Sciences at Cambridge this Autumn, and will be joined by George Townsend who has an offer to study Mathematics. Emilia Troughton has an offer for Veterinary Science and Alan Saji, Joe Thompson,  Alice Kirkup, and Lauren Abbiw-Wood have a number of Medicine offers between them. With the level of competition higher than ever before for Early Applicants, we are really pleased that our students have had their talent and potential rightly recognised for these very competitive courses.

Aspring Early Applicants at the Thomas Hardye School participate in our two year Early Applicants programme, including regular seminars, mock interviews and admissions tests preparation. Most importantly, students are encouraged to develop their subject interests far beyond the curriculum, supplementing the outstanding teaching available in sixth form lessons. There are additional opportunities, such as the recent Oxford and Cambridge Information Day that we again hosted in April at the Thomas Hardye School. Staff and students from Merton College, Oxford and Downing College, Cambridge provided a very useful and insightful morning for our students together with those from a number of other schools across Dorset.

We are also delighted to be involved for a second year in New College, Oxford’s ‘Step Up’ programme, a pilot access initiative which aims to raise the aspirations of state school students through contact with the same group of students over three years. Our Year 12 Early Applicants will be visited by Daniel Powell from New College on 24th May for an additional workshop on personal statements, and earlier this year 42 of our Year 11 students visited New College as part of the ‘Step Up’ programme. Our day in Oxford included tours of St Catherine’s College and Jesus College as well as a tour of New College, lunch in New College Hall with current tutors and undergraduates, a Q+A session with students, and sessions on the application process and A-level study. The Year 11 students found the day to be an overwhelmingly positive and inspirational experience. Petko Petsev (11XF) observed that, “Oxford has always been the university from the movies - something impossibly distant, but at the trip I was actually there actually speaking about realistic prospects of applying. Realising that there is a chance was amazing.”
